Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method that requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently shave the top layer of the skin, removing dead skin and vellus facial hair, aka peach fuzz. Sound scary? It’s not! Here are a few of the top Dermaplaning Myths addressed.
Myth #1: Dermaplaning will cause the facial hair to grow back thicker and darker.
Fact: The vellus hair on your face is soft and thin by design; the structure of the hair cannot be changed by “shaving” or Dermaplaning.
Myth #2: Dermaplaning is painful.
Fact: There is absolutely no pain involved in the Dermaplaning process; most clients report feeling a gentle tickle or brushing sensation.
Myth #3: Dermaplaning is too harsh for Sensitive Skin.
Fact: Dermaplaning is actually the gentlest way to exfoliate the skin and remove facial hair. It is ideal for clients with sensitive skin.
While Dermaplaning cannot be performed on active acne, it works wonders for preventing it! Vellus hair on the face can trap and hold bacteria, leading to breakouts. Removing the hair prevents bacteria and dead skin cells from building up and clogging pores. It can even fade old acne scars over time by stimulating cell turnover. Other benefits of Dermaplaning include better penetration of products and peels as well as a smoother makeup application and all over brightening of the skin.
Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, comfortably creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the body’s natural wound healing process. This results in a remodeling of the skin, including the formation of collagen and elastin. This treatment is ideal for anyone experiencing fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, acne scarring and uneven skin texture. With little to no downtime, mild post-procedure effects and lasting results, Microneedling is the perfect treatment for all skin types. Surgeons Challenge Other Businesses to Join
FORT MYERS, FLA., July 11, 2018 – Facial Plastic Surgeons Dr. Stephen Prendiville and Dr. James L. Newlon are teaming up with Assuage Luxury Spa to raise money to support Captains For Clean Water, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for and protecting South Florida’s water resources.
“We are disheartened to see the damage caused to our rivers and estuaries by the unnatural discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Our fish and seagrasses are dying, our shorelines are caked with green algae, and our decaying water quality is impacting everyone,” said Drs. Prendiville and Newlon. Both are avid fishermen and supporters of Captains For Clean Water.
“The solution is to restore the natural flow of the water by purchasing land to treat and convey Lake Okeechobee water south. Funds to do this are already available through Amendment 1, but our legislature is slow to act to implement this long-term solution,” they said.
To help Captains For Clean Water convince the Florida Legislature to acquire land south of Lake Okeechobee, both physicians and the Assuage Luxury Spa will donate 10 percent of their income from injectables and filler sales to the non-profit for the entire month of August. The offer will be extended to Assuage Luxury Spa locations in both Fort Myers and Naples, where Dr. Prendiville serves as medical director.
The surgeons are issuing a challenge to other businesses to also dedicate a portion of their revenues during August to help Captains For Clean Water save our waters. Businesses that wish to join the challenge should contact Captains For Clean Water at www.captainsforcleanwater.org .
“We believe strongly that we must put pressure on our legislators and the Army Corps of Engineers to save the fisheries and coastal communities of south Florida. It starts with just a few of us stepping forward to say ‘enough is enough’ and we ask others to join us in this fight to protect our waterways, and ultimately, our way of life,” said Drs. Prendiville and Newlon.
The fund-raiser will include all injectables and fillers offered by both physicians, including
- Juvederm Vollure™ – a long-lasting filler that is FDA-approved to soften moderate to severe lines around the nose and mouth with results lasting as long as 18 months;
- Juvederm Voluma® – the first filler approved to restore age-related volume in the cheeks;
- Juvederm Volbella® – an injectable for lip augmentation and correction of lines around the lips;
- Sculptra® – an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen – an underlying cause of facial aging – for results that can last more than two years; and
- Other fillers, such as Radiesse®, Restylane®, Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport® and others.
Dr. Prendiville is the only Fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeon in Fort Myers who is certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
